Toronto: District energy hub

When it comes to heating and cooling buildings, district energy is the equivalent of public transit moving people, according to Emily Macrae in "How Sharing Energy Can Save Toronto Money" published by the Torontoist. But what is its value?

Experts are claiming energy and cost savings and greenhouse gas reduction, so expanding district energy's use could greatly benefit the area. Toronto is already home to five large district energy systems, including the Enwave Toronto district heating and cooling system. Fernando Carou, senior engineer for the City of Toronto, says the opportunity for more district energy growth in the city is significant, with room for up to 30 more systems.

Author Macrae states that a sustainable city requires dense networks of both public transit  routes and district energy systems.
