District Energy Systems Could Save Energy, Reduce Emissions

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recently released a report "District Energy in Cities: Unlocking the Potential of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy."

Penn Energy reported March 2 that UNEP – in collaboration with the Copenhagen Centre on Energy Efficiency, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, and UN-Habitat – analyzed 45 champion cities with district energy systems as part of its study. It found that district energy systems could help reduce energy sector emissions by 60% and energy consumption by 50% by 2050.
